![]() Saying it the long way sounds like something from a Japanese 101 lesson and makes me think the script was translated one line at a time by someone who's not very experienced at it. ![]() Moved this to the end to improve readability, but basically in Japanese you wouldn't say "I give you my sword" ("私はあなたに私の刀を上げる"), but rather something like "give sword" (刀を上げる) and people would figure the details from the context. but in a good way that makes you feel smart and educated for realizing. There was also a lot of general Asian cliches that nobody actually says like "he has no honour!", which sounds incredibly bizarre. There's tons of weird, unnatural sounding phrases and a weird obsession with saying "me" and "you" in every sentence, even though those are usually omitted in Japanese. The voice actors themselves were industry veterans who did a great job, but the Japanese script was clearly first written in English and translated into Japanese extremely directly, presumably without a native editor. This is going to sound weird, but one of my favourite things about the game was how the Japanese voice over was terrible in a very specific way. It probably helps if you played the Commandos games back in the day and are used to the whole "intricate pattern of over-lapping guards that you need to dismantle one at a time starting from the weakest link" type of gameplay that's more puzzle than tactics. Pretty sure I dropped it for several months due to being stuck on the "we probably shouldn't kill anyone." level and only beat it after getting frustrated enough to go on a(n in-game) killing spree. I really liked this game, although the later levels did get kinda annoyingly hard.
